Many people use their bodies as a matter of course when getting their work done. Athletes, footballers, labourers, chefs, police officers, the list goes on and on. Yet when it comes to sex work, many societies place restriction on a person’s ability to use their body to do their chosen work. Is this fair?

Join us for an evening of poetry and spoken word performances held at the charmingly intimate bookshop The Society Club in Shoreditch.

 

Poets Performing:

Naomi shihab-nye

We have American-Palestinian award-winning poet Naomi Shihab-Nye reading from her book “Tender Spot”.

 

Her father was a Palestinian refugee and her mother an American of German and Swiss descent, and Nye spent her adolescence in both Jerusalem and San Antonio, Texas.

 

Her experience of both cultural difference and different cultures has influenced much of her work.

Shirin Razavian is a Tehran-born British poet who has appeared in Poetry LondonIndex on CensorshipExiled Writers MagazineAgenda and Persian Book Review among others.

 

She has published five Farsi and English poetry collections in the UK, the latest of which was Which Shade of Blue featuring original works and translations of her work by the poet and translator of Russian literature, Robert Chandler.

 

Some of her poems were recently translated to Czech and published in an anthology called Before Infinity Ends. 

 

Shirin’s poetry is also featured in an anthology by the United Nations Society of Writers called Happiness-The Delight Tree.

To conclude our evening, we have Charlie Dupré, a spoken word and rap artist known for combining literary influences with a pulsing, characterised delivery.

 

Described by Annexe Magazine as ‘ a unique brand of poetic wizardry’, on the spoken word circuit and at festivals such as Latitude, In The Woods, Secret Garden Party, Soundwave and Troyfest, he has supported the likes of Scroobius Pip, Ghostpoet and Kate Tempest, is a multiple slam winner, and four-time Hammer and Tongue National finalist.

 

He is co-founder and host of the freestyle rap event, “On The Spot’ and has two hip-hop releases, ‘2012 Male’ and ‘OT’, currently out on Rocstar Recordings.
